What we call ‘lifestyle-focused care’ can be thought of as functional medicine for pets. The idea is that by offering integrative veterinary services, we can better serve you and your pet.
Revel Vet, Co-Founder, Dr. Kris Latson explains this approach as customized care, tailoring the health, veterinary wellness and medicine for the age and lifestyle of our pets.
“This begins at the first visit when we are getting to know each other and discussing vaccines, deworming, parasites, and more.
Obviously, there are core vaccines but if you have a dog that’s going to be your hiking companion or will be at the ranch with your horses, we will have a completely different conversation than the dog that will be sitting in your purse going shopping with you.”
Lifestyle medicine starts at the beginning and helps plan your pet’s care over the course of their lifetime.
Empowering Pet Owners to Make Veterinary Wellness Decisions
At Revel Vet, we want to help pet owners develop and implement a plan.
“What do you need to be thinking about down the road for that dog who is super active, might be a large breed dog who could develop orthopedic issues, or may be more exposed to parasites and rattlesnakes versus a dog that lives in an apartment and may only ever go for walks on concrete?”
Lifestyle medicine also takes the pet owner’s preferences into consideration.
“I like to give pet owners a roadmap of different options. Some people want their pets to live like a Ferrari, others a Ford and others can do a little Volkswagen, but it doesn’t mean one is better than the other.
There are obviously factors that go into how we make those decisions. We want to meet each client where they are and help simplify the process of caring for a pet through their lifetime.”
Celebrating Our Role As Pet Parents
In a world where so many of us struggle with the feeling of never “being enough,” the third part of our mission at Revel Vet is to flip the switch.
“I always try to tell pet parents that they are doing an amazing job. Sometimes I tell them, ‘When I die, I want to come back as your animal because you really put so much thought, effort and care into your pet. You are really doing an amazing job.’
We don’t tell ourselves that enough in life. Whether that’s as a pet owner or a mom, we don’t give ourselves enough credit. We want to help remind people that what they are doing is really enough and a lot of times it is beyond enough.“
Dr. Kris reminds us that animals have no concept of money and definitely do not waste time feeling sorry for themselves about living situations.
“Have you ever noticed that dogs living with the homeless don’t feel sorry for themselves? They are just in the moment with their owner and because they have this relationship with their owner, they feel like they won the Super Bowl.”
Our animals have much to teach us, but one that strikes so many of us is the reminder to live in the moment.
“I see that with animals. They are so happy to see you, no matter what. We are their people and whatever that may mean for that family, whatever that lifestyle is, they are, for the most part, super happy.
And that’s how we came up with the name, Revel. That is the feeling, the idea, that when your dog or cat looks at you, they are reveling in you.”
